Community Meal

Since the fall of 2022 we have been offering a community meal the last Sunday of the month following our second service. Signs are put out around the Hillside neighborhood inviting people to come to this free meal. People come for food but more than that they come for company. One woman said, “There are other places we can go to get food, but we have the best conversations here.”

WHEN? The Community Meal happens on the last Sunday of every month from 12:00-1:30. Volunteers are needed for approximately two hours between 9:30 and 2:00. Depending on the menu, sometimes we do some food preparation on Saturday.

WHY? FLC stands for First Lutheran Church but it also spells out our mission! FLC stands for Faith-Love-Community. Our mission is 

Growing in Faith, Spreading God’s Love, and Gathering in Community. 

Serving the Community Meal helps us to demonstrate our mission to offer food and fellowship to people in our neighborhood.

HOW?  Many hands make light work! Two hour time slots: sign up for one or two!

  • 9:45-11:45 Cooking and Setup Team (6 volunteers needed) Come down when you are ready after 1st service and a cup of coffee! Meal Coordinators will have everything organized and will give you jobs to do.
  • 11:45-1:45 Serving and Hospitality (6 volunteers needed) These volunteers serve the meal from 12:00 to 1:30. If you come for the first time slot and can stay until 1:45, please sign up for both times!
  • 12:00-2:00 Cleanup (2 volunteers needed) These volunteers run the dishwasher and put away clean dishes and tools.

Other jobs: (please ask one of the Meal Coordinators if you are interested)

  • Sign Posting Team: Currently we have two people who can do this, but we need another person or two to trade off this responsibility each month.
  • Meal Coordinator Team: We need one more team of two people so that the responsibility can be alternated monthly between the teams.
