The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy and the Path to a Shared American Future

We are honored to welcome Robert P. Jones, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy and the Path to a Shared American Future, as the speaker at our inaugural FaithLoveCommunity – Dialogue in Action Series.

Jones will offer insights into the historical context of prejudice and its consequences. In addition to Tallahatchi County, Mississippi, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jones will examine historical acts of racial violence in Minnesota, including the 1862 mass execution of 38 Dakota men in Mankato and the 1920 Duluth lynching of Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie, all Black men.

While these events represent a tragic chapter in our past, it is important to acknowledge the positive steps taken toward healing. In 2003, a plaza and bronze statues memorializing the three lynched men were dedicated in downtown Duluth. This act is a testament to the community’s commitment to remembrance and reconciliation.

With this understanding and a commitment to building a brighter future, we invite you to join us in this critical conversation. This event and the ongoing efforts of various local community organizations in the Twin Ports contribute to the healing process and progress toward a shared future.

Robert P. Jones is the president and founder of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI.org) and writes regularly on politics, culture, and religion for the Atlantic, TIME, and Religion News Service.

He is frequently featured in major national media, such as CNN, MSNBC, NPR, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. He is also the author of White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity, which won a 2021 American Book Award, and The End of White Christian America, which won the 2019 Grawemeyer Award in Religion.

Jones writes weekly at robertpjones.substack.com, a newsletter for those dedicated to the work of truth-telling, repair, and healing from the legacy of white supremacy in American Christianity. He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University and an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Music at the Series

The event begins with a musical performance by violinist Erin Aldridge and pianist Alexander Sandor at 5:30 p.m. with a blues piece that sets the mood for the evening, “Deliver My Soul” by David Baker. Selections from the inspiring works of Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata and the Saint-Seáns Sonata No.1 for Violin and Piano conclude the program.
